Alan R. Morse, JD, PhD
Alan R. Morse is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology of Columbia University and also President Emeritus of Lighthouse Guild where he worked for more than 52 years to improve the quality of care and services for people with vision loss. Originally trained in rehabilitation counseling and psychology, his interests include functional implications of vision loss, communication issues in care delivery, patient perspectives and engagement in treatment, behavioral determinants of adherence, and implications of vision loss for healthcare delivery. His work brings sensitivity to psycho-socioeconomic and ethical issues in providing patient care.
He is a member of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Collaborator Network and the GBD Vision Loss Expert Group, the board of governors of the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research and has been an officer or director of numerous healthcare organizations including the Healthcare Association of New York State, the Greater New York Hospital Association, the Alliance for Advancing Nonprofit Healthcare, and the Advisory Board of the McPherson Eye Research Institute, among many others. He also is a frequent participant on workgroups, review panels and task forces. Dr. Morse served on the inaugural Advisory Panel on Addressing Disparities of the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the editorial board of Ophthalmology of the American Academy of Ophthalmology where he was a consultant to the Academy’s Vision Rehabilitation Committee and JAMA Ophthalmology of the American Medical Association. He is an ad hoc peer reviewer for more than a dozen journals.
Dr. Morse received his BA from Franklin College, MS from Indiana University, JD from Pace University and PhD from Fordham University.
